Bolts For The Original Equipment LT5 Connecting Rods

Original Equipment Bolt      ARP Replacement Bolt

Bolts for the original equipment LT5 connecting rods are no longer available from GM. We have bolts that are custom manufactured for us by ARP. These bolts are also designed by ARP. They are made from 8740 chrome moly material with 195k psi tensile strength.

The cost is $195 for a set of 16.

Individual bolts are $13 each.

Application details:

The OE bolts are made with metric class 10.9 material with a nominal 151k psi tensile strength. These bolts are made with 8740 material, the nominal tensile strength is 195k psi. They have 25% higher tensile strength.

This is the preferred tightening procedure. Use moly grease to lubricate the threads and under the bolt head. Tighten the bolt two times to 50 foot pounds torque to form the bolt and rod threads. Use a punch to dimple the top of the bolt. The other end of the bolt is already dimpled. Use a bolt stretch gauge to measure the length of the bolt between the dimples. Tighten the bolt until it stretches .0063” +/- .0002”. This tightens the bolt to 75% of the yield point.

Alternate tightening procedure. The tightening method in the GM service manual. Use engine oil to lubricate the threads and under the bolt head. Tighten the bolt to 22 foot pounds torque. Then, turn the bolt 80 degrees.
