Bolts For The Original Equipment LT5 Connecting Rods

Original Equipment Bolt      ARP Replacement Bolt

Bolts for the original equipment LT5 connecting rods are no longer available from GM. We have bolts that are custom manufactured for us by ARP. These bolts are designed by ARP. They are made from 8740 chrome moly material with 190k psi tensile strength.

The cost is $195 for a set of 16.

Individual bolts are $13 each.

Application details:

The OE bolts are made with metric class 10.9 material with a nominal 151k psi tensile strength. Because the 8740 material has a higher tensile strength, the bolt tightening procedure for these bolts is different than the GM service procedure.

This is the preferred tightening procedure. Use engine oil to lubricate the threads and under the bolt head. Tighten the bolt five times to 50 foot pounds torque to form the bolt and rod threads. Tighten the bolt until it stretches .0063” +/- .0002”. This tensions the bolt to 75% of the yield point. The clamping force on the connecting rod is 25% greater than OE the clamping force. The bolts can be reused because this tightening process does not cause the bolt to yield.

Alternate tightening procedure. This is similar to the tightening method in the GM service manual. It makes an allowance for the higher strength bolt material. Use engine oil to lubricate the threads and under the bolt head. Tighten the bolt to 30 foot pounds torque. Then, turn the bolt 60 degrees.
